To whom it may concern,
I am a proud native southerner who was raised in a working class household in rural east Tennessee. Over the years, I have continually been amazed and embarrassed by the statements and actions of politicians from the South, and your Senator Brandon Smith is continuing that trend.
It is stunning, to the point of being beyond understanding, how Sen. Smith could make such an outright wrong assertion that “we all know” that the Earth and Mars have the same temperature. As humorous as idiotic statements such as this are, they are also deeply offensive to me, as they perpetuate the stereotype of Appalachian Southerners as being willfully ignorant, easily duped, and out of touch with basic scientific facts.
You, the residents of Senate District 30, must now take responsibility for the continuing disparagement of your region due to the comments of clownish figures such as Sen. Smith; after all, in any democracy, we get the leaders we deserve, and as he was elected by you, Senator Smith is a reflection of who you are and of how you want to be served.
My hope is that you will choose in the next election to have enough respect for yourselves to proudly reject Sen. Smith for bringing shame and embarrassment onto himself, and, by extension, onto you.
Thank you for your time and attention.
