The Hazard Bulldogs played their first game of the season on Saturday as they took on the Pikeville Panthers in the Pike County Bowl.
Pikeville scored the first touchdown of the game, but soon saw that touchdown erased as Hazard got on the board. The first period ended with the scored tied at seven.
The tit-for-tat exchange continued with the Bulldogs going up 21-14. Pikeville tied the score with only a handful of seconds on the clock. Hazard was down to their final play when Tanner Morgan found Chris Hudson just outside the end zone. Hudson was able to roll over a Panther defender to enter the end zone for the score. The touchdown sent Hazard into the half with the 28-21 lead.
The third period and early moments of the fourth period did not go well for Hazard. Pikeville used several turnovers to take the lead, and held the 56-28 lead with just over six minutes left to play.
The Bulldogs got a long run from Kody Arnett to cut the margin to 56-36, which kicked off what can only be described as an amazing rally. The Bulldogs seemed to score at will, and recovered a pair of on-side kicks.
With a little over a minute to play, Hazard had cut the lead to 56-50. However, the Panthers were able to score on their final possession, bring the tally to 62-50. Hazard did not have enough time to recover this time, and the game ended with the 62-50 score.
