The Perry County Central boys’ soccer team looked to defend their 14th region title last week against the Estill County Engineers. The two teams tied 2-2 in both of their previous meetings.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half as neither team would be able to find the net. The game went to the half tied at zero.

Perry Central took the early lead after a foul in the box. Logan Spencer took the penalty kick and nailed it in the left corner, giving the Commodores the early 1-0 lead.

Estill County wasted little time erasing the score on an extremely long shot. The Engineers would then take the 2-1 lead and settle into their defensive stance.

The Commodores struggled to break the Engineers’ defense in the latter minutes of the contest. With four minutes left to play, Logan Spencer took a free kick at the top of the penalty box. Brecken Harvey ran under the shot and headed it past the goalie in the upper corner. And, for the third time, the game would end tied at two.

Neither team scored in the overtime period, sending the game to penalty kicks. Perry Central missed their first attempt, while Estill County connected on all five (5-4), giving them the win and the title.

After the game, Coach Lunsford said, “I’m really proud of the way our boys have played all season, and especially tonight. I doubt there are any other teams in our state, let alone our region, that can lose nine seniors off a region championship team and compete the very next year for the region title again. We will be back here next year competing. We only lose two starters and our players feel like they have a chip on their shoulder to win another region championship for the school.”
