The Hazard Lady Bulldogs will welcome in a new head coach this season (not exactly a new headline in recent years) as Harold Brashear will take the helm. Brashear came over from the boys’ team where he served as an assistant.

Brashear will have a wealth of experience at his disposal as at least 10 players will have varsity experience. Hazard will return four seniors (Maddison Niece, Tori Wells, Brittany Miller and Kelli Patrick), two juniors (Hannah Webb and Susie Chaney) and four sophomores (Kelsi Caudill, Colbi Johnson, Lexi Griffie and Morgan Robertson).

The Lady Bulldogs will be trying to improve upon their 15-14 finish last season. Hazard’s season came to an abrupt end as they lost a heartbreaker to Leslie County in the opening round of the 54th district.

When asked about the team’s early goals, Brashear said, “I would like to see us show improvement on a daily basis. However, trying to implement a new system is going to be the hardest part.”

As for long range goals, he noted success in the annual all “A” tournament as one.

“I would like to play Leslie County in the finals of the 14th region All ‘A’ and make it to the state tournament,” he said. “We would also like to play in the 14th region.”

The 14th Region will offer come tough competition, he added, especially in the 54th District, where he said each of the teams present their own challenges.

“I see Perry Central and Leslie County as number 1 and 1A,” he said. “We will have to battle Buckhorn as they are a much improved team.”

Coach Brashear also sees Perry Central and Leslie County at the top of the region.

“Other teams to watch in the region include Powell County and Letcher Central,” he added.
