Anyone acquainted with basketball should be familiar with the McDonald’s All-American status. McDonald’s status has been bestowed upon three Perry Central standouts, two players and a coach.
Lady Commodore center Kayla Rankin and Commodore center Justin Johnson were both nominated as McDonald’s All-Americans. Coach Randy Napier, of the Lady Commodores, was nominated and selected to coach in the event held in Chicago.
Both Rankin and Johnson are also on the list for players vying for Mr. and Ms. Kentucky Basketball. Voting for this award will be held after the season in complete.
Rankin is Perry Central’s all-time leading scorer with more than 3,000 points. She also has more than 1,500 rebounds in her career.
Johnson is on pace to eclipse the 1,500 points and 1,500 rebound mark by season’s end. Only six other players in Kentucky basketball history have reached this mark.
When asked about his selection to coach one of the McDonald’s teams, Napier was at a loss for words.
“I really don’t know what the process was in choosing the coaches. I guess the news that I broke the record for the most wins in the state, someone picked up on it and nominated me,” he said. “I have to say, it is pretty cool, and kind of a big deal.”
