Basketball should be just a game

On the court, the 53rd District title game between Knott County Central and Cordia High School couldn’t have been played any better. It was the epitome of what athletic competition should be — two teams playing their hardest, and when the dust settled, there were no hard feelings.

But it seems off the court was a different matter, especially in the hours before the game even began. That’s when some Internet banter began taking shape, most of it admittedly benign. But in at least two instances some of the worst surfaced in the form of Internet posts with apparent racial motivations.

In the past year several student-athletes have transferred to Cordia, many of whom are black. Two in particular hail from Canada. These two kids were the target of at least one opposing fan’s ire last week.

In a classless and distasteful posting made to social networking sites on Friday, an image of a Canadian flag was altered so that a noose hangs from the maple leaf, with a caption reading, “F*** Canada” pasted across the bottom. It’s hard to imagine that this post wasn’t directed at two of Cordia’s players, and it’s even harder to imagine that race didn’t play a factor.

This is 2013. Division along racial lines should be a thing of the past, and in instances like this, where the ignorance of racism bubbles to the surface, our country, and specifically our region here in Eastern Kentucky, really shows its lack of progression.

And it didn’t stop at a Canadian flag adorned with a noose. Another post on Friday shows a photo of Cordia coach Rodrick Rhodes, who is black, standing in front of his bench with his arms outstretched, three of his players, none of whom are black, standing behind him. A caption pasted along the top and bottom reads, “BACK TO THE BENCH WHITE BOYS.”

It’s hard not to hang my head at asinine drivel like this that is symptomatic of a nation yet to fully invest itself in equality. We should be beyond things like this now. Instead this is a stark reminder that our nation has a long way still to go, especially considering that something like basketball could spur on such derision.

It would be easy to simply shake my head and stress that this game these kids are playing is just a game. But these racially-motivated posts go beyond the game of basketball and speak to things that matter more, because when the game ends, real life begins again off the court.

This past weekend the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that one of Cordia’s transfers, senior Emmanuel Owootoah, a highly regarded point guard receiving interest from several major Division I colleges, transferred from his school in Canada after his mother began looking for avenues out of their neighborhood where gang violence was prevalent.

So, he enrolled at Cordia High School. And for what? To be treated this way?

We’re better than that, or at least we should be.

Some may say that my reaction is an overreaction, but for now, I can’t help but wonder how things move forward from here. Mr. Owootoah will graduate from Cordia and likely attend a major university outside of our region. And what stories will he be able to tell about his time in Eastern Kentucky, and especially about the people here?

The point the writer is making is that racism should never be a part of what WE in eastern KY are about. All of us. Not about pointing fingers at either school. What would we say to anyone in the state who posts a UK or U of L flag or symbol with a noose on it? The racist posts should have been handled quickly and decisively by those with the power and authority to do so. Are we really comparing nooses to redneck comments? Really? How many people died from being called a redneck or even felt threatened by it? Can you imagine wondering if your window getting busted out or your mailbox getting destroyed is only be the beginning of something worse? That's already happened in this case by the way. I think that bad sportsmanship is the least of worries here. How about the mindset of thinking it is okay to post these things in the first place. The person who posted this is the nation's opinion of us is unfortunately correct. For every step we take forward some of us seem determined to push us back several more. As a veteran who has traveled around the US and the world I know first hand how many perceive us here in our region. With our perennial high unemployment, poverty and prescription medication issues here in Eastern KY, it looks like we could at least not add racism to that already long list.

Thanks for targeting us (KCC). We weren't the only ones sporting bad sportsmanship. If you would've noticed that Cordia was throwing rude comments at us, too. Like how we're rednecks and we can't spell. Please do more research next time you write about ONE side of a story. Thanks! #PatriotPride

PatriotPride, people who use racist slurs and make threats like using a noose in an image ARE rednecks. What a shame that this story has made the news state- wide and will soon go national. This is not how we should treat one another. Instead of giving these boys from Canada a warm welcome, we've only reinforced the nation's opinion of us as...well- you said it- ignorant rednecks. A few in Knott Co. make us all look bad. Remember the Golden Rule, everyone. And love thy neighbor.

He was not targeting KCC in this if you read the begging of the article he clearly stated that it was on both sides. However some of the KCC fans did take it too far! But did they have to place a Canadian flag burning and also one with a noose. KCC does not chant USA in all their games like they did at this particular game. Then putting up a sign on the wall that stated "Made N Merica".... No one is saying that Cordia is innocent. They are clearly stating what happened. The things that BOTH teams put online was childish. Most of it is what you expect when two rival schools are competing. Thank you!

It isn't fair that their pointing fingers at the entire school. And doesn't any one think that if we're racist we wouldn't have black players on our team whom everyone loves? We have 3 on our team.

The things that Cordia did was childish. However some of the KCC fans went way too far. NO ONE IS SAYING THAT EITHER SCHOOL IS INNOCENT!!! But for some fans to post crap like that is appalling. I happen to know that these young men from Canada are very intelligent and very down to earth. They are some of the nicest young men that I know. What would you think if you were in someone from Cordia's shoes? Comparing a redneck to a Canadian flag burning and one with a noose on it, is not even close to each other. One is way worse than the other. If you stop and think about it you would feel the way that some of the Cordia fans feel about it. I happen to know that KCC does not chant USA at every game and it was not because they are the patriots either. Take a look at it from the other side, then think if it were one of your children. No one wants this for their kids. NO ONE!!

I have seen the things that Cordia sent. They were childish and nothing was made toward certain students. Things such as paying the refs and saying stuff about rednecks.
