A story uploaded to hazard-herald.com Friday incorrectly reported on action taken by Alpha Natural Resources in relation to the company’s coal mining operations.
Last week’s story noted that Alpha announced on Friday, Jan. 4 that it would cut a total of 1,200 jobs and close eight mines in three states. The company actually made the announcement in September 2012, according to Samantha Davison, with Alpha Natural Resources.
The company did announce on Friday that it would idle four mines in Kentucky – three in Harlan and one in Letcher County — and eliminate approximately 200 positions, which Davison noted is part of the company’s effort to “ensure the future success and growth of Alpha in a challenging time for the coal industry.”
