HAZARD — A Perry County woman was sentenced this month after pleading guilty to embezzling money from an Operation UNITE fund.

Teresa Huff was the Perry County Drug Court supervisor until resigning earlier this year. She was later indicted on charges of abuse of the public trust, eight counts of possession of a forged instrument, and theft by unlawful taking.

The indictment stated that she had written checks of up to $2,000 to herself from fund for the Perry County UNITE Coalition, for which she served as the treasurer. All totaled the amount was over $11,000 from this account.

In August, Huff and prosecutors reached an agreement in which she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of abuse of public trust. All other charges were dropped and her maximum sentence was reduced to five years in prison, which will be probated for a period of five years. Her probation will be supervised and she will be required to pay restitution of $28,000, $23,000 of which has already been paid. She will also have to pay court costs, probation fees, and any fees stemming from mental or psychological evaluations that can be mandated by Probation and Parole.

Huff was sentenced on Oct. 4.
