Grand jury indicts several in theft and drug cases

Three people accused of stealing or illegally receiving items from storage units at A&B Storage Facility on North Main Street were three of the several people indicted by the grand jury on this month.

Johnny F. Melton, 46, of Hazard allegedly possessed bolt cutters used to cut locks at the storage facility on December 22, 2010. He also allegedly burglarized several storage bins at A&B Storage Facility from October to December 2010, allegedly with the help of Steven Bashline, 39, of Hazard.

Barbara C. Combs, 50, of Hazard, allegedly received several items that had allegedly been stolen from the storage bins by Melton and Bashline.

Melton was indicted on one count of third-degree burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools. Bashline was indicted on one count of third-degree burglary and Combs was indicted on one count of receiving stolen property over $10,000.

The bonds for all three were set at $20,000 and they are scheduled to appear in circuit court for arraignment on March 24 at 9 a.m.

Carlos Herald, 24, of Hazard, allegedly escaped from the custody of the Kentucky River Regional Jail on January 27, and allegedly committed the escape after having been convicted of another felony while still on probation or parole for the previous conviction.

Herald was indicted on one count of second-degree escape and one count of second-degree persistent felony offender. His bond was set at $50,000 and he is scheduled to be back in court on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Joshua Godsey, 30, of Ary, allegedly possessed a forged check in July 2010 in the amount of $150, and allegedly committed this offense while on parole or probation for a previous felony conviction.

Godsey was indicted on one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and one count of second-degree persistent felony offender. His bond was set at $30,000 and he is scheduled to appear in circuit court for arraignment on March 24 at 9 a.m.

Brandy M. Watts, 29 of Leburn, allegedly possessed a forged check in the amount of $125 in July 2010.

She was indicted on one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Her bond was set at $5,000 cash, and she is also scheduled to be in circuit court on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Stephen M. James, 21, of Sassafras, is accused of possessing a forged physician’s prescription in January 2010 in order to obtain controlled substances.

His bond was set at $20,000 cash and he is scheduled to appear in circuit court for arraignment on March 24 at 9 a.m.

Timothy D. Jent, 41, of Krypton, is accused of illegally possessing oxycodone on or around September 1, 2009. Also on or around September 1, 2009, Jent was allegedly intoxicated in public when he appeared at Tin Camp Lane, and allegedly possessed drug paraphernalia.

He was indicted on one count of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, one count of public intoxication and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

His bond was set at $20,000 cash and he is scheduled to appear in circuit court on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Jennifer Whitaker, 35, of Hazard, allegedly possessed oxycodone and Alprazolam on or around December 10. At the same time, she also allegedly stole merchandise from Walmart in the amount of $25.11, after arriving there under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She also allegedly possessed drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs not in the original container at the same time.

She was indicted on one count each of theft by unlawful taking under $500, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, third-degree possession of controlled substance, prescription drugs not in the proper container and public intoxication.

Her bond was set at $20,000 cash and she is scheduled to appear in circuit court for arraignment on March 24 at 9 a.m.

Daisy S. Ritchie, 70, of Slemp, allegedly possessed Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and Alprazolam on or around November 23. She also allegedly did not have the drugs in proper prescription containers and was carrying a loaded .22 handgun under the driver’s seat of her vehicle.

She was indicted on one count each of first, second and third-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription drugs not in the proper container and carrying a concealed weapon.

Her bond was set at $20,000 cash and she is scheduled to appear in circuit court on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Gary Pendergrass, 32, of Hazard is accused of illegally possessing oxycodone on or around October 14, 2010. He also allegedly possessed prescription medication not in the prescription container and was at K-Mart under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the same day.

He was indicted on one count each of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription drugs not in the proper container and public intoxication.

His bond was set at $20,000 cash and he is scheduled to appear in circuit court again on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Shannon Walker, 40, of Hazard, allegedly possessed oxycodone around October 25, 2010. She is also accused of possessing prescription drugs not in the proper container and drug paraphernalia. She was also allegedly caught driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, her second offense in less than five years, and was charged with other traffic-related violations.

She was indicted on one count each of second offense driving while under the influence, failure to wear seat belts, failure to provide insurance card, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription drugs not in the proper container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Her bond was set at $20,000 cash and she is scheduled to appear in court again on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.

Dixie J. Nix, 50, of Viper, was indicted for allegedly stealing merchandise from J.C. Penney by using physical force and caused public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm at the store by cursing, screaming and kicking HPD Officer Minor Allen and store manager Randy Canonge. She also is accused of threatening to cut Canonge and to use physical force against Allen.

Nix was allegedly found to have Methadone in her possession and not in the proper container, and introduced the drug into the Kentucky River Regional Jail.

She was indicted on one count each of second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, second-degree promoting contraband, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, third-degree terroristic threatening and prescription drugs not in the proper container.

Her bond was set at $75,000 cash and she is scheduled to appear in circuit court on March 24 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.
