The second semifinal game of the 8th grade girls’ county tournament pitted the R. W. Combs Lady Mustangs against the Chavies Lady Cardinals. The Lady Mustangs inched ahead throughout the game, and eventually pulled away for the 39-12 win.
Both teams raced back and forth in the first quarter trying to set the tempo. R. W. Combs was able to settle in late in the first period, and post a 7-3 lead at the horn.
Although scoring was limited in the second period, R. W. Combs was able to add to their advantage. The Lady Mustangs went into the locker room sitting on a 15-5 lead.
Little changed in the third period as R. W. Combs continued to stay one step ahead of Chavies. With six minutes remaining in the game, the Lady Cardinals needed to put together a big rally as they trailed 24-10.
R. W. Combs put Chavies’ hopes of a comeback to rest early in the fourth period. The Lady Mustangs exploded in the period, and went on to take the game 39-12, putting them in the finals.
