The first mining related accident in Kentucky in 2013 has resulted in the death of a Perry County man.

Jerry A. Watts, 52, of Slemp, was working at the Begley No. 1 mine, owned by T & T Energy, LLC., at Short Creek in Leslie County Saturday morning when a jack slipped allowing a liner to strike him in the head, the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety (OMSL) said.

Watts was pronounced dead by the Leslie County Coroner Greg Walker.

OMSL investigators interviewed other employees on Monday who were present when the accident occurred.
