Brant Wooton

Brant Wooton of Hazard, the husband of Margie Wooton,  passed away on Wednesday, March 5, at the Hazard A.R.H. Hospital.  At the time of his death, he was eighty-eight years of age.  Mr. Wooton was retired as Maintenance Supervisor at the Hazard Vocational School

Along with his widow, he is survived by his daughter, Nancy Walker of Hazard and three sons, Darryl Wooton of Hazard, Ralph Wooton of Colson and Jerry Wooton of  Bonnyman.  He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

The family received friends on Thursday evening, March 6, at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Friday morning, March 7, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Benny Davidson officiating.  Interment was at the Campbell Cemetery in Confluence.

All arrangements were entrusted to staff at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home.

Dr. Clyde Darraugh Wooton

Dr. Clyde Darraugh Wooton, who was born on April 28, 1924, at Glowmar-Stormking, Kentucky,  passed away on Thursday, February 28.  The time of his death, Dr. Wooton was 83 years of age.  Dr. Wooton was the son of the late Dennis B. and Alta York Wooton. Along with his parents, he was also predeceased by one sister, Jean Campbell.

He was a life-long resident of Perry County and a member of the Buckhorn Presbyterian Church.  After obtaining his Doctorate degree, he practiced Optometry for fifty-six years in Hazard.  In the early years of his practice, he also maintained an office in Hyden.  He was a member of the Kentucky Optometric Association, and he was a Veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  Dr. Wooton also represented District 93 in the Kentucky Legislature’s House of Representative’s 1954 session.

Dr. Wooton is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Keen Wooton of Buckhorn; their sons, Robert Darraugh Wooton of Fairfax, Virginia, and Dwight David Wooton of Buckhorn; their daughter, Sharon Denise Wooton Redd of Hazard; he brother, Dennis Patrick and wife Veda Wooton of Buckhorn and his sister, Eileen Sandlin and husband Jim Ingram of Jackson.

Along with a host of other relatives and friends, Dr. Wooton is also survived by three grandchildren, Dwight David Wooton, Jr. and wife of Stephanie of Cornettsville, Rebecca Ayn Redd and Robert Allyn Redd, both of Hazard.

A Memorial Service for Dr. Wooton was conducted on Monday afternoon, March 3, at The Buckhorn Presbyterian Church with the church’s co-pastors, Tom and Gayle Burns officiating.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.

Joshua Brain Walter Williams

Joshua Brian Walter “Josh” Williams, who was born on March 26, 1996, departed this life on Friday, February 22.  At the time of his death, he was eleven years old.  Josh was born in Hazard, the son of Barbara Irene Stidham Williams.  He was a member of the Holiness Tabernacle Church of God in Knott County.  Josh was a fifth grade student at Chavies Elementary School, and he enjoyed bicycles, four-wheelers, working in the garage and riding dirt bikes.  Josh was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Walter Couch, Jr. and his great-grandmother, Melda Stidham.

Josh is survived by his mother, Barbara Williams and his sister Andrea Samantha Williams; his grandparents, Raleigh and Sheila Stidham and a very special friend, Isaac Miller all of Barwick; his great-grandmother, Maxine Couch of Willard; aunts and uncles, Kasey and Byron Owens, Tosha Stidham, Chris Baker and Nannie Lynn Stidham and cousins Haydyn Owens and Jayden Stidham.  Along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and other relatives, he is also survived by two close friends, Wayland Neace and Trayvon Noble.

The family received friends on Monday evening, February 25, at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 26 with Jesse R. Hollifield and J.C. Baker officiating.  The burial was at the Stidham-Francis Cemetery at Barwick

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.

George Combs

George Combs, who was born on November 8, 1918, passed away on Thursday, February 28, being eighty-nine years of age at the time of his death.  He was born in Alais, the son of Richard and Ellen Combs.  A retired employee of the Perry County Board of Education, Mr. Combs was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Combs is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Geneva Combs of Hazard; three sons, Harold Eugene Combs of Hindman, Ricky Combs of Hazard and Adam and wife Cora Combs of Hazard.  He is also survived by four daughters, Hopie Linda and husband Larry Jones of Indianapolis, Indiana, Loretta and husband Roger Colvin of Lexington, Johnnie Faye Turner of Hazard and Carolyn and husband Shelby Ritchie of Talcum.  His surviving siblings are Leonard Combs of Muncie, Indiana, Hershel Combs of Second Creek, Jimmy Lynn Combs of South Carolina, Cornie Howard of Second Creek, Eula Mae Combs of Ary, Ollie Marcum of Muncie, Indiana and Veda Herald.  Other survivors are his twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren as well as one-great-grandchild “on the way,” along with a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Mr. Combs was conducted at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning, March 1, with Rev. Pete Youmans and Rev. Bob Bowling officiating.  The burial was at the Mt. Memory Garden Cemetery in Hindman.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff of the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.

Roland Roberts

Roland Roberts of Slemp passed away on Saturday, March 8, at the Eastern Kentucky Veteran’s Center in Hazard.  At the time of his death, Mr. Roberts was eighty-nine years of age.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Zona Roberts; daughters, Oda Cox of Illinois, Mavis Holbrook, Eunice Holbrook and Orpha Cornett all of Slemp; step-daughters, Eulah Turner of Slemp, Carol Hendrickson of Cumberland, Geneva Pennington of Letcher and Prudie Lewis of Hazard; sons, Manis Roberts of Slemp and Mason Roberts of Indiana; step-son Carson Eldridge of Somerset and his sister, Evie Roberts Bolling of Manchester.  He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends on Monday evening, March 10, at the Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Tuesday afternoon, March 11, at 1:00 PM with Church of Christ Pastors Jeff Roberts and Teddy Burke officiating.  The burial was at the Beech Fork Cemetery.

Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home of Viper was in charge of all arrangements.

Ronald “Ducksie” Shepherd

Ronald “Ducksie” Shepherd of Hardburly departed this life at his home on Sunday, March 2.  At the time of his death, he was sixty-nine years of age.  He was a member of the Tribbey Pentecostal Church and a former employee in the steel milling business in Kendallville, Indiana.

His surviving siblings are Floyd Miller of Knott County, Adam and wife Patty Shepherd of Tennessee, Mack of Ligonier, Indiana and Arizona Everage of Knox, Indiana.  He is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Tuesday evening, March 4, at the Hardburly Baptist Church where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday morning, March 5, at 11:00 AM.  The burial was at the Hurdburly Cemetery.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff of the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.

John Eversole

John Eversole of Vicco, the husband of Yvone Eversole,  passed away on Saturday, March 8, at the Hazard A.R. H. Hospital.  The time of his death, he was sixty-nine years of age.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Debby Williams Eversole.

Along with his widow, he is survived by his daughter, Jenette Eversole, one sister, Rebecca Jean Campbell; three brothers, Dock Eversole, David Eversole and Homer Eversole.  He is also survived two special nephews, Willie and Curt Cornett.

The family received friends on Tuesday evening, March 11, at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday morning, March 12, at 11:00 AM with James Cornett and Billy Ray Eversole officiating.  Interment was at the Combs Cemetery, Second Creek.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home.

Thomas Robert Frazier

Thomas Robert Frazier, whose birth date was July 7, 1931, passed away on Friday, February 1.  At the time of his death, he was seventy-six years of age.  Mr. Frazier was the founding District Ranger for the Redbird Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest.  After leaving Redbird, he worked in Arkansas and Tennessee before moving to Atlanta where he retired from the Forestry Service in 1984.  At the time of his death, he was a resident of Marietta, Georgia.

Mr. Frazier was married to Carolyn Parman Frazier until her death in 2005.  He is survived by his children, Jenniver Frazier of Knoxville, Tennessee and Joseph Frazier, M.S. of Atlanta, Georgia.  He is also survived by two granddaughters, Jessica and Elizabeth.

A Memorial lunch has been scheduled for Monday, March 17, 2008, at 1:00 PM to be held at the Redbird District Office, 91 Peabody Road, Big Creek, Kentucky.  RSVP to telephone #606-598-2192, extension 105 and leave a voice mail with the names of the attendees.  Tax deductible honorariums in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Frazier Family Development Fund, Kennesaw State University Foundation, Inc., 1000 Chastain Road, N.W., Mailbox 9101, Kennesaw, Georgia 30144.
