Perry Central wins JV tourney

Over the weekend, the 54th district held their second annual JV tournament. This year, the Perry County Central Commodores took home top honors as they defeated Hazard 35-31 and Buckhorn 48-32 in the championship game.

In the first game, the Commodores defeated the Hazard Bulldogs after holding a slim lead throughout the game. At no time during the game did Perry Central hold more than a couple of bucket advantage, but still managed to hold their composure and hold on for the 35-31 win.

Heath Brashear led the Commodores in scoring with 22 points, while the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Presley Campbell who had 16 points.

Hazard (31) Presley Campbell 16, Josh Combs 5, A. J. Spare 5, Matt Williams 3 and Cameron Bailey 2.

In the championship game, the Commodores hooked up with the Buckhorn Wildcats, who made it to the championship game by defeating the Leslie County Eagles 33-32. This game proved to be close in the opening quarter, but turned to the Commodores' advantage midway through the second period.

After staking a 22-10 halftime lead, the Commodores were able to steadily increase the margin down the stretch. Perry Central was successful in preventing the Wildcats from getting back into the game, and won going away by the final count of 48-32.

Heath Brashear led the Commodores in scoring with 20 points, giving him 42 for the tournament, while Jake Rice led the Wildcats with 18 points.
