The Sacred Winds Ensemble comes to The First Federal Center in Hazard for their 2012 tour on Sunday, June 10 at 2:30 p.m.
This summer’s concert, Psalms, Hymns, and Spirituals Songs: The Gospel in Appalachian Music explores Christian worship music from Appalachia including such well-known hymns as “Amazing Grace” and “Come Ye Sinners”. Dr. Will Peebles, Director of Western Carolina University’s School of Music, will speak on Appalachian and Shape-Note music and will lead the ensemble and audience members in a Sacred Harp singing.
The ensemble will also present the concert at The Paramount Theatre Ashland on June 11 at 7 p.m. and in Charleston, SC on June 15 at the Berkeley Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. The ensemble will also send outreach musical groups to area churches in Hazard on June 10 and Charleston, SC on June 13 as well as present a Summer Music Symposium to Charleston-based middle school and high school instrumental music students their directors on June 15.
Hazard native Dr. Scott Bersaglia founded the Sacred Winds Ensemble in 1997. Recent performances of note by the ensemble include The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2011, the 2010 Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, and the 2008 Church Music Conference in New Orleans, LA.
