HAZARD – More than 150 people were cited recently by the Perry County solid waste office for failing to maintain garbage collection service, and officials are asking for those who remain in violation to contact the solid waste office.

Signing up for and maintaining garbage collection service is required by county ordinance in Perry County, and carries a maximum civil fine of $600. And while most of the people initially cited are now in compliance, there remains more than 50 people who are not, according to Solid Waste Officer Rosa Couch.

The Perry County Solid Waste Enforcement Board met Tuesday in Hazard, where only one of the people cited appeared to pay their bill, noted board member Andy Vanover, adding that the enforcement board normally refers cases in which residents fail to maintain collection service to Perry District Court.

Garbage collection in Perry County is handled by Waste Management, and costs approximately $15 per month, but Vanover added that there are options for people who may be having trouble paying their bills. Anyone who has not signed up for service and has been cited can attend the next meeting of the enforcement board in January. At the meeting, the citation can be contested, the bill paid, or an alternate plan can be worked out with the board to come into compliance.

In the meantime, anyone cited can also see Rosa Couch in the old Perry County Courthouse on Main Street.

“They need to contact Rosa and get it taken care of,” Vanover said. “If they don’t show up when they’re supposed to, we’ll go ahead and send them to district court.”

The Perry County Solid Waste Enforcement Board will meet again on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. in the solid waste office in the Perry County Courthouse.
