At the state solo and ensemble competition Hazard High School students made a great showing receiving all distinguished ratings.
The Hazard High School Choir recently competed in the district and state choral competitions, receiving high marks across the board at both competitions.
On April 10, the high school choir performed in Pikeville. The groups consist of 44 members, but they competed in smaller ensembles of 16. In total, the group had seven ensembles, all of which received distinguish ratings, which is the highest score possible.
Three of the seven ensembles were recommended for the state competition.
Along with the ensembles, Hazard High School also sent 12 soloists to the district competition. All 12 received at least an excellent rating with nine receiving distinguished ratings. The three soloists with excellent ratings were Hannah East, Lindsay Jones and Mandy Barnett. The nine soloists that received excellent ratings were Katie Eversole, Lindsay Branson, Stephen Patula, Morgan Thacker, Ariel Snider, Johnathan Perry, Elias Hanna, Cody Jones and Lauren Joseph.
Five of the soloists, Ariel, Johnathan, Elias, Cody, and Lauren, were also recommended for state.
On May 5, sixteen members of the Hazard High School chorus participated in the state solo and ensemble competition at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
The ensembles preformed “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel,” “Shoshone Love Song,” and “Set Down Servant.” All of the ensembles were awarded with distinguished ratings.
The 16 students were Hannah East, Cydnee Dawhare, Lindsey Jones, Elias Hanna, Jonathan Perry, Aerial Snider, Morgan Thacker, Krista Grigsby, Brittany Claussen, Katie Eversole, Laura Beth Mosley, Hannah Claussen, Stephen Patula, Kaleb Huber, Shane Williams, and Mandy Barnett. The groups were directed by Letha Patterson, with Tudy Cody assisting with the trip to state.
This was the first time that Hazard has participated in the State Solo and Ensemble Competition.
