The Perry County Central Lady Commodores opened their 2012 softball season on Thursday with a game against the Pike County Central Lady Hawks. The Lady Commodores fell behind early, but rallied to take the lead. They then had to hold off a late rally to collect the 11-6 win.

The Lady Commodores struggled in the top of the first inning with their defense, allowing the Lady Hawks to plate three runs. However, in the bottom of the frame, Perry Central was able to one-better Pike Central, putting four runs across the dish.

Perry Central went on to score three more runs in the second inning, and one in the third to take the 8-3 lead at the midway point. The Lady Commodores tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, bringing the tally to 11-3.

The Lady Hawks would not go away easy in the end. Pike Central would start a rally in the final inning, forcing Perry Central’s defense to buckle down. The Lady Hawks scored three runs in the frame, and threatened more before the Lady Commodores could stop the bleeding. Perry Central went on to win the game by the final count of 11-6. Shelby Sheffield went 4 of 4 at the plate and had 12 strikeouts on the mound to lead the way.
