Knott County Central represented the 14th Region in the boys’ Sweet 16 last week for the second straight season, advancing to the second round at Rupp Arena before falling to Ballard High School Friday evening.
The Patriots overcame a slow start against Clay County Thursday in the opening round, finding themselves down 17-9 after the first quarter. They more than made up the difference in the second period to take the 31-23 lead into halftime. Led by sophomore Camron Justice with 29 points, the Patriots eventually went on to take the 68-54 win.
Knott Central took on Ballard, winners of the 7th Region and eventual tournament runners-up, Friday evening. Ballard came into the game having defeated Johnson Central 75-54 during Thursday’s early evening match-up. The Bruins, out of Louisville, took down a second mountain team by handing the Patriots only their sixth loss on the season, with a final score of 68-53. Justice led the Patriots in scoring again with 24 points.
Knott Central finished their season at 30-6, with coach B.B. King earning his second straight trip to the Sweet 16 in his three years as coach at Knott County.
