HAZARD -- A Perry County man was arrested on allegations of arson following a fire in Lothair Thursday night. Chris L. Caudill, 42, of Viper, was charged with second-degree arson by the Hazard Police Department after allegedly setting fire to the residence. Hazard Fire Chief Sam Stacy said that the fire department was called to a house fire at 408 Hemlock Street in the bottom section of Lothair around 9 p.m. Thursday evening. “When they got there, there were flames coming out of one window and the attic space,” said Chief Stacy. Stacy said that as the fire was investigated it was found that there were some suspicious circumstances surrounding the ignition source. “Usually when it is burning in one room and another room, and not the rest of the house, it’s suspicious,” he noted. Following their initial findings they called the Hazard Police Department to help in the investigation. When Hazard police arrived, Chief Minor Allen said that the fire department told them that the fire had definitely been intentionally set in the home. After talking to several witnesses police found that there had seen several individuals running from the home and acting suspiciously before the fire started. “They located the residence where the people that they saw leave the residence had went,” said Chief Allen. Authorities questioned several people in that home including a minor. “One individual, a juvenile, stated that he saw his father start the fire,” said Chief Allen. That man was identified as Chris L. Caudill, though police were unable to locate him at that time. Caudill had been living in the home while doing work for the homeowner. While the motive is still unclear, Allen said it is believed that Caudill had gotten into an argument with the homeowner. According to Chief Allen, police did arrest Caudill’s wife, Jasmine Caudill, on an outstanding warrant. Eventually, Caudill was found and taken to Kentucky River Regional Jail at around 2 a.m.
