MTV holding casting call at HCTC

HAZARD — Producers from the MTV show MADE are coming to Hazard Community and Technical College, and a local student or two could benefit.

MADE is a reality TV show based around one student with a goal, and a coach whose job it is to help the student achieve his or her goal. In the past they have taken shy kids and turned them into break dancers, cheerleaders, beauty queens, musicians and even athletes.

The hour-long show has been on the air since 2002 and 250 episodes have been produced, and there soon could be one made in Hazard. The show has won three Emmys and helped hundreds of students find confidence and learn what it takes to work toward a goal.

Nearly all of the episodes from the first 11 seasons have been focused on high school students, but according to HCTC President Dr. Stephen Greiner, the producers are looking in a new direction.

“They did say that they had been focusing on high school students, and now they were expanding into the college realm,” said Griener.

MTV is holding casting calls at several Kentucky community colleges, including Gateway in Covington. Greiner said that he believed in total they are holding interviews at four colleges.

The positive nature of the show was definitely a factor in deciding to host an interview. Greiner said that since the show legitimately tries to help students he was happy to agree.

“This is certainly one of those very positive shows, and shows students in a very positive light,” he remarked, adding the process has happened quickly so far, as he just talked to producers last week. “Also, it is not a bad program since it is a three-time Emmy award winning program.”

Students between the ages of 18 to 26 at HCTC will have the opportunity to interview for the show in front of producers. The interviews will be held on April 13 in the Jolly Center room 133 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a questionnaire that can be picked up or requested that is required for the interview. HCTC has posted much of the information about the interview process on their website and on their Facebook page.

“It would be wonderful if we had one or more students that had the opportunity to figure out that they have unlimited potential and get some assistance with the next step in their life,” said Greiner.

If a student is selected, they are given any sort of training and motivation they need from their MADE coach, a professional who has been working in the field or skill the student has as their goal.

Greiner said he hasn’t had the chance to talk to many students about if they are going to sign up or what their goals may be, but he feels confident they will have a good turnout.

“I do believe that there will be sufficient response and a good sign-up for the interviews,” said Greiner.

He joked that he was a little disappointed that he could not try out, but is excited for his students.

“In this one they are looking for people 18 to 26, or they must at least look between 18 and 26, and they weren’t interested in me,” said Greiner. “How about I become a NASCAR driver at Bristol Speedway.”

“We are so excited about this opportunity for our students,” he continued. “We hope that we will have someone selected from here.”
