Hazard High School student Jarrod Combs on Wednesday signed his letter of intent for a full NCAA Division I athletic scholarship.

Combs has been a golfer for years, and will now be taking his talents to the next level. “I’ve been playing it ever since I can remember,” he said. “That is all I have been doing.”

Combs has spent the last six years playing golf for Hazard High School, and has had great success in the sport. He will now have the chance to play for Morehead State University.

“I have thought about going to Morehead academically, and I had a couple of people from here that played at Morehead that I play with at the golf course all the time, and they said they would put in a good word,” said Combs.

The good word along with his stellar record seemed to do the trick, because he began being recruited in September. Now he will have a full ride and be a student-athlete at the university.

Unlike signings in the past, Combs’ new coach at Morehead was unable to attend due to Division I regulations, keeping coaches from having contact with players before they graduate.

Combs was the golf team captain this year, leading Hazard to a sixth straight All A title and earning himself a regional runner-up trophy. Along with playing golf, Combs also played on the state championship Bulldog football team in 2011 and the regional champion team in 2012.

After college, Combs said that he would love to make a career in golf, but knows that it will take hard work. “I hope so,” he said. “It takes hard work, dedication. Anything is possible.”

Combs is the son of Ronald Combs, a county magistrate, and Sandra Combs, who works at the Hazard Independent Board Office. Both parents say they are incredibly proud of their son.
