BONNYMAN — Three people were transported to the hospital in Hazard Monday following a head-on collision on Highway 15 near the Bonnyman dip.

A car making an illegal left turn has been cited as the cause of the accident, according to Perry County Deputy Bruce Fields, who noted that at approximately 1 p.m. the driver of a truck stopped to make the left turn from Highway 15 toward Typo. A second truck then stopped behind the first before a red passenger car coming down the hill failed to see the stopped vehicles in time. The car skidded into the truck, causing the car to spin while pushing the truck out of its lane and into the path of another vehicle, a delivery truck for Johnny’s Tires.

The delivery vehicle struck the second truck head-on, causing it to spin 360 degrees in the roadway. Fields added that the driver of the first vehicle attempting to make the turn toward Typo left the scene before authorities arrived.

The road was closed going both directions as the second truck came to rest in the middle of the road, while the red passenger car stopped in the north bound lane and the delivery truck came to rest in the north bound lane.

The drivers of both trucks and a passenger in the red car all sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. Their injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The roadway was opened back up by 2 p.m.
