Fifth grade students from Sinnett Elementary in Leslie County spent a day in the bee yard recently.

Arch Coal hosted the students, whose teacher, Ms. Vicki Wooten, has been working with Dr. Tammy Horn of EKU in building the study of the honey bee into the curriculum at Stinnett Elementary and has allowed Dr. Horn to come into her classroom on a number of occasions.

The field trip, taken earlier this month, allowed Arch’s environmental engineers the chance to interact with the students and to discuss various subjects including the formation of coal, the uses and benefits of coal as well as to describe to them the various methods of mining. They were also able to help educate them on other aspects of reclamation such as revegetation, reforestation and habitat enhancement.

Arch Coal officials say thet are proud of the company;s continued efforts with Dr. Horn and her research on the honey bee.
