Perry Central and Buckhorn met on the field for an abbreviated game in the 54th District softball tournament Wednesday evening, with the Commodores running away with the 7-0 win.
The game would come to a close in the second inning after an injury to a Buckhorn player (which the left the Wildcats able to field only eight players) and subsequent rainfall resulted in the early ending.
Buckhorn had won only one game coming into the postseason, but had a chance to hold Perry Central (21-13) scoreless in the first inning when a two-out fielding error began a rally that eventually resulted in a five-run inning for the Commodores. Buckhorn could not counter with a score of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Perry Central’s bats came alive again in the top of the second with two quick runs after Whitney Back hit a line drive to left field for a triple. A Buckhorn player left the field after the play, and the Wildcats were set to continue the game with just eight players on the field when a thunderstorm ended the evening with less than two full innings played.
The game will not be rescheduled, giving Perry Central the win while setting up a rematch with Hazard in the district finals. Perry Central won the teams’ first match-up 14-2 in five innings on May 1.
The district title game is scheduled for Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at Perry Central.
