BUSY – A Leslie County man is facing drug dealing charges this week after police say a traffic stop turned up drugs and hundreds of dollars in cash.

Perry County Deputy Bruce Fields made the stop just after noon on Tuesday. He said he had assisted a state trooper on another stop in which two people were alleged to be using drugs. When asked where they purchased the drugs, Fields said they reported that a man identified as 44-year-old Randall Wells, of Wooton, Ky., had sold them the drugs on Buster Lane in the Busy community.

While en route to the area, Fields said a white Ford Bronco, which Wells was reported to be driving, pulled out onto old Highway 80 near Couchtown Road. That’s when Fields pulled the vehicle over and made contact with Wells.

During a pat down, Fields said Wells admitted to possessing a bag of marijuana, in which he found eight smaller baggies of marijuana, a plastic baggy with 13 marijuana cigarettes inside, and a third bag containing 71 Methadone tablets. Inside Wells’ wallet, Fields also located $1,059 in cash.

There were several factors that led Fields to charge Wells with drug trafficking, including that the baggies of marijuana were separated, the large amount of cash and that the pills, while all the same dosage, were different types. According to the arrest citation, some of the pills were circular, while others were oblong in shape.

Wells was charged with one count each of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and trafficking in marijuana less than eight ounces. The latter charge is a misdemeanor, though the other charge is a Class C felony and carries a maximum of 10 years in prison.

He was transported to the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard.
