HAZARD – Beginning Wednesday, June 20, a traffic pattern change will be put into effect at the intersection of Ky. 15 and Crawford Mountain Road in Perry County.

Left turns from southbound KY 15 onto Crawford Mountain Road will be prohibited. Likewise, left turns onto southbound KY 15 from Crawford Mountain Road will also be prohibited. This intersection will become a “right-in, right out” intersection, with turns permitted only from northbound KY 15 onto Crawford Mountain, and from Crawford Mountain onto northbound KY 15.

Pavement markings and signage will be installed to indicate these changes.

Crawford Mountain Road is maintained by the Perry County Fiscal Court and connects KY 15 near the intersection of KY 80 and the Hal Rogers Parkway with KY 550 near Perry County Central High School.

This action was taken at the request of the Hazard Police Department because of the number of vehicle accidents at this intersection. A large number of accidents were noted when southbound KY 15 vehicles turned left onto Crawford Mountain and were struck by vehicles traveling north on KY 15. After receiving the request, Transportation Cabinet engineers reviewed the accident history at the intersection and conducted a traffic count analysis. They determined that the request had merit and agreed to make the change in the interest of highway safety.

Motorists whose movements will be impacted by this change will be able to use KY 15 and KY 550 as an alternate route.

Drivers should use caution in this area on June 20 while crews make the necessary pavement marking and signage changes
