UPDATE: Man accused of firing shots in custody

A Perry County man who allegedly fired a shotgun inside a residence in Allais and caused a local technical college campus to be put on lockdown has been arrested after evading police Tuesday night.

The Hazard City Police Department received a call around 8:30 p.m. that Jimmy Sizemore, of Allais, had allegedly fired a shotgun through the roof of a home on Walker Branch Road before leaving the residence in only blue jeans and possibly carrying the shotgun. Sizemore was reportedly highly intoxicated and had threatened to kill himself.

Police searched the area, but could not find Sizemore Tuesday night. The incident caused Hazard Community and Technical College to place their technical campus, which is across the street from the residence where the incident occurred, on lockdown for a few hours. Approximately 30 students were escorted from the building just before 10 p.m.

Sizemore was found Wednesday morning in Allais after Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen sent patrols out to the area to continue the search.

“I sent them back out there to look for him again because really, last night, with it dark and him with a shotgun, I just didn’t want to push the incident to where there would be any kind of injury to him or to my officers, so we backed off and decided to try to wait until this morning to try to locate him,” Allen said.

Allen said Sizemore was found just as officers returned to the scene, apparently driving by in a vehicle. He was stopped and placed under arrest. There was no incident upon arrest and charges are pending.

“We’ve dealt with him several times in the past, nothing like this, but you know he’s never caused any problems or anything,” Allen said of taking Sizemore into custody.

“I was told that he did receive a buckshot to the face, but that’s another reason we’re getting him medically cleared at the hospital, to make sure that he’s not injured,” Allen said. “That’s of course always our priority that we make sure the victim or the offender’s not injured before we do anything further.”

Sizemore was taken to the Hazard ARH Psychiatric Center after being taken into custody for evaluation. No other injuries from the incident have been reported.
