The Hazard Bulldogs took on the Estill County Engineers in the semifinals of the 14th region baseball tournament this week. The Bulldogs took the only meeting (12-0) between these two teams during the regular season.

The Bulldogs started the game well as Austin Johnson took an Engineer offering out of the yard for the 1-0 lead. Hazard’s bats, however, would go silent until the sixth inning.

By the time the Bulldogs could get their bats going again, they would trail 6-1. The sixth inning would see Hazard make a new game of it as they would score five runs to tie the game at six.

Hazard collected five hits in the frame (Josh Meehan had the only extra-base hit), and five RBI (J. T. Haynes had two RBI) in the inning. Estill County, unfortunately, would also plate runs in the frame, giving them the 8-6 lead.

The Bulldogs would go down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning, giving the Engineers the 8-6 win.

Hazard stats: Austin Johnson 2 runs, 2 hits and 1 RBI, Griffin Wells 1 run and 1 hit, Evan Whitaker 1 run, 1 hit and 1 RBI, Jordan Olinger 1 RBI, Nathan Stupart 1 run, Josh Meehan 1 run, 1 hit and 1 RBI, and J. T. Haynes 1 hit and 2 RBI. Pitching: Austin Johnson 3.33 innings, 19 batters, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 5 runs, 0 earned runs. Evan Whitaker: 2.67 innings, 12 batters, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs.
