UCM celebrates 10 years in mountains

HAZARD—Ten years ago, Southeastern Kentucky was gifted with a new way of approaching higher education. Instead of students having to choose between more options at a state university or the security of staying closer to home and attending a local community college, both of those options were made available with the establishment of the University Center of the Mountains (UCM) at the Hazard Community and Technical College (HCTC). On Wednesday of last week, staff and administrators at the UCM celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the UCM.

 

County BOE approves calendar, teacher raise

HAZARD-The Perry County Fiscal Court met for its regularly scheduled meeting on earlier this month to discuss possible cases of voter fraud.The court took care of regularly scheduled business by approving minutes from the last meeting, review of the third quarter report, approving the treasurer’s report, and paying bills.

HAZARD- Local author Nancy Kelly Allen has released two new books this year.Allen, a retired school librarian from the Hazard City School system, has written more than 30 picture books and two middle grade books and has been writing since 1989.The first book she wrote this year is titled, “First Fire: A Cherokee Folktale,” and is a picture book for young children.
