On Wednesday, the Perry County Central Commodore boys’ soccer team took to the field in their quest for yet another district title (they had won 8 of the past 10). Their opponent in the title game would be the always tough Letcher County Central Cougars.

From the beginning, Perry Central was able to dominate time of possession. Their big break came at the 10 minute mark when Cody Gayheart found some space just outside the box and got a shot off (1-0).

The 1-0 score would hold until late in the first half. Travis Dunn was able to work his way around the Letcher defense for an easy near post shot (2-0).

A few minutes later, Dunn went back to work. This time Dunn took a pass from Zac Combs and deposited low into the near corner. The game would go to the half with Perry Central up 3-0.

The Commodores came out of the break on fire. Seconds into the half, Zac Combs dribbled through the defense for the 4-0 lead.

Combs then placed a ball in the box for a header by Jake Mullis. However, the goalie would knock down the shot, but Jacob Farris would tap in the rebound (5-0).

Perry Central went up 6-0 on a Dagen Combs goal. A Letcher Central defender misplayed a ball in the box, and kicked it straight to Combs who headed the ball into the net.

The second goal of the night by Jacob Farris put the Commodores up 7-0. Farris played a long through ball by John Watts for the goal.

Zac Combs picked up his second goal of the evening after a dazzling dribble through the defense for a shot directly in front of the box (8-0). Perry Central took a step closer to ending the game when Travis Dunn played a ball straight across in front of the goal and Jacob Farris tapped it into the far post (giving Farris the hat-trick).

The game was called for a “mercy rule” with 9 minutes remaining when Chad Smith volleyed a shot into the net after the ball had bounced around in the penalty box. The stoppage of the game (10-0) gave Perry Central the title for the 9th time in 11 years.

Perry Central stats: Goals: Dagen Combs 1, Zac Combs 2, Travis Dunn 2, Jacob Farris 3, Cody Gayheart 1 and Chad Smith 1. Assists: Zac Combs 2, Jake Mullis 1 and John Watts 1.
