On Monday, the Perry County Central Commodore soccer team hosted a game in the opening round of the state tournament. The Commodores opponent in the opening round would be the South Laurel Cardinals. They were familiar with the Cardinals as they meet in the opening week of the regular season.
Defense was the main objective in the early going as neither team wanted to give the other the first advantage. The Commodores made some early miscues on defense, but were able to recover, and eventually settled into their game.
Near the 26 minute mark, Travis Dunn found some room down the left side, and dribbled around the Cardinal defense. Upon reaching the box, Dunn was fouled, giving Perry Central the penalty kick. Chad Smith took the shot low and to the left post, putting the Commodores up 1-0.
A few minutes later, Jacob Farris put the Commodores up 2-0. Farris took a ball from Dagen Combs, headed it down, and deposited in the net.
Coming out of the break, Jacob Farris connected on his second goal of the night. Zac Combs fed the ball to the top of the box, and Farris turned on it from 25 yards out, catching the goalie off lineand hit the upper part of the goalpost (3-0).
With 16 minutes remaining in the game, South Laurel broke the ice, and
erased one of the Perry Central goals. The Cardinals made a strong solo run through the defense, and took the goalie one-on-one (3-1).
Late in the game, Travis Dunn was taken down in the penalty box by a reckless slide by South Laurel. Dunn stepped up and hit the penalty kick, setting the final score at 3-1.
