On the opening night of the 6th grade tournament, the Leatherwood Lady Wildcats and the Buckhorn Lady Wildcats took to the floor. Leatherwood took the early lead, but could not hold off a determined Leatherwood team.
Leatherwood controlled the pace in the first quarter, and ended with the 8-6 lead. The pace remained high in the second period, but neither team could gain a clearcut advantage. The period ended in a 6-all tie, sending Leatherwood to the locker room with the 14-12 lead.
Buckhorn came out of the break hot, and eventually took the lead. However, the lead would not last long as Leatherwood went back on top. With six minutes to play, Leatherwood held the 24-23 advantage.
Buckhorn had more in their tank when the final period began, and they slowly built a small lead. Midway through the period, it was clear that Buckhorn controlled their own destiny as they began to pull away. Leatherwood could not steal the momentum late, and Buckhorn moved on in the tournament with the 38-28 win.
Buckhorn (38) Bennett 11, Johnson 8, Daniel 12, Riley 6, and Abner 1.
Leatherwood (28) Pratt 9, Holbrook 5, Whitaker 8, Roark 2, and Williams 4.
