On Friday, the Perry County Central Commodores traveled across town to take on the Hazard Bulldogs in their first meeting of the season. The Commodores trailed early, but picked up the pace and captured round one of the season 62-48.
Both teams came out a little tentative, with the first bucket coming near the midway point. The Bulldogs took the early advantage, but turned the momentum over to the Commodores. However, a shot at the horn gave Hazard the 10-7 lead.
The Bulldogs continued with their pace in the second period, however, the Commodores were able to nearly triple their output. The difference in scoring sent Perry Central into the locker room with a 27-19 advantage.
Perry Central came out of the break and forced the tempo, allowing them to go up by as many as 16 in the period. Hazard was able to rally midway through the frame, and cut the Commodore lead to 8. However, the final run would belong to Perry Central, sending them to the final quarter with the 44-32 lead.
The Bulldogs pulled out all the stops in the final period trying to get back into the game. The Commodores were able to keep the game in the double-digit range, protect the ball, and hit enough free throws to preserve the 62-48 win.
Perry Central notched its first win of the season (1-0) while Hazard evened their record at 1-1.
