On Friday, the Hazard Bulldogs hosted district rival the Buckhorn Wildcats. Before the game, the fans from both teams got together to raise more than a $1,000 for the Cameron Hoskins and Scotty Blank scholarship funds.
Hazard controlled the momentum in the early minutes of the game. The Bulldogs would race out to a double-digit lead (22-12) by the time the horn sounded to end the first period.
Buckhorn picked up the defensive pressure in the second period, and slowed the Bulldogs’ offense. However, the Wildcats would not be able to cut into the Hazard lead, and went into the locker room trailing 35-23.
The Wildcat pressure took its toll on the Bulldogs in the third period. At the midway point, Hazard had not scored, and Buckhorn had cut the margin to a single point at 35-34.
A few second later, the Wildcats had completed the comeback by tying the game at 36. The last couple of buckets would belong to Hazard, giving them the 39-36 lead going into the final period.
The Bulldogs would build a six point lead in the fourth quarter on a couple of occasions, but each time the Wildcats would claw their way back.
Buckhorn managed to hit a shot to tie the game at 50 with just a few ticks left on the clock. Hazard raced down court and got off a shot, and was fouled on the attempt. Austin Spurlock was able to hit one of two from the line, giving the Bulldogs the 51-50 with 2.7 second remaining. Buckhorn was unable to hit their final attempt, giving Hazard the win.
