The Buckhorn Wildcats opened the 2016 WYMT tournament with the Harlan County Black Bears. The Wildcats were able to control the tempo in the first half, but turned over control of the game to the Black Bears in the second half.
Buckhorn’s defense seemed to rattle Harlan County in the opening moments of the first quarter. The Wildcats were able to take advantage of the confusion, and held the 13-10 lead at the end of the first period.
Harlan County began to pick up the pace midway through the second quarter, and eventually moved into the lead. Buckhorn had a brief run late in the period, but still went into the locker room trailing 26-24.
The Wildcats’ usually strong period is the third period, but the magic did not materialize on this night. The Black Bears put together a rally that netted them a double-digit lead early in the frame. Going into the final period, Buckhorn trailed 51-34.
The Wildcats pulled out all the stops in the fourth quarter in an effort to get back into the game. Buckhorn’s defense seemed to turn the tide as they made in back to within six points late in the game. The Black Bears would be strong enough in the final minute to pull out the 68-56 win.
