The Perry County Central Commodores began their quest for their sixth WYMT champions on Wednesday. The Commodores took on the Lawrence County Bulldogs in the opening round. The Bulldogs defeated the Commodores just a week earlier, and they were looking for some revenge.

Although the Commodores were unable to build a big lead early in the game, they did control the tempo for the onset. At the end of the first period, Perry Central had a slim 14-12 lead.

The pace picked up considerably in the second quarter, with Perry Central still holding a slim margin. Each time the Commodores would stretch the lead, the Bulldogs would find a way to cut back into it. Going into the intermission, Perry Central was on top 36-31.

Soon after the second half started, Perry Central was ahead by double-digits. From that point on, Lawrence County was forced to play catch up. With eight minutes left to play, the Commodores held the 56-45 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Commodores extended their lead to 19 points. However, once again, the Bulldogs came storming back. The lead never left the double-digit margin down the stretch, and a late rally by Lawrence County still left Perry Central with the 83-72 win.

Perry Central was lifted to the win by five “3”s by Travis Dunn and six “3”s by Noah Back.

Perry Central (83) Travis Dunn 23 (1 assist and 2 rebounds), Matt Turner 10 (2 assists and 3 rebounds), Damon Tobler 12 (3 assists, 1 steal and 7 rebounds), James Blair 14 (10 assists, 1 steal, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks) and Noah Back 24 (2 assists, 1 steal and 1 rebound).

Lawrence Co. (72) R. Dalton 14, Chaffins 7, Kiser 12, T. Dalton 24, Richardson 14 and Ratliff 1.
