On Friday, the Hazard Lady Bulldogs took on the Lady Owls of Owsley County in the semifinals of the All “A” region. The two teams battled back and forth, with the final blow coming from Hazard. The Lady Bulldogs moved into the championship game with the 59-54 win.
The two teams spent the first half of the game throwing their best punch at the other in hopes of setting the tone. Hazard took the first lead, but found themselves trailing 15-8 at the end of the first period.
The start of the second period belonged to the Lady Bulldogs as they cut the lead to 15-14 in just a couple of minutes. The next rally belonged to the Lady Owls as the momentum swung their way, giving them the 21-14 lead. Hazard rallied late, but still went into the intermission trailing 25-21.
The third period would be dominated by the Lady Bulldogs as they doubled up on the Lady Owls (22-11) in the frame. With eight minutes left to play, Hazard held the 43-36 advantage.
Owsley County inched their way back into the game during the final minutes of the play. Hazard struggled from the free throw line, allowing the Lady Owls to tie the game at 54 with under a minute to play.
The Lady Bulldog defense would stand strong in the closing seconds, keeping the Lady Owls from getting a good look at the basket. Hazard would hold on to advance to the championship game with the 59-54 win.
