Mustang gallop to 8th grade title

After a long and arduous tournament, two teams stood poised to claim the 8th grade Perry County title. On Saturday, the R. W. Combs Mustangs and the Buckhorn Wildcats to to the floor in the quest for the trophy.

Buckhorn came out of the gate strong and took the early lead. However, the quickly ran out of steam, allowing R. W. Combs to steal the momentum. The the first horn, the Mustang held the upper hand with the 12-5 lead.

R. W. Combs’ pressure would not be able to crush the Wildcats’ spirits as the came to life in the second period. The Mustangs would not relinquish the lead in the frame, but they did allow Buckhorn to regain their confidence for a second half rally. At the half, R. W. Combs held the 27-18 advantage.

The Wildcats continued to play aggressively in the third period, and quickly cut the margin to a single possession. The Mustangs, however refused to give up the lead, and clung to the 38-32 lead.

By the midway point of the final quarter, Buckhorn’s out of control defense worked them back to within two points (41-39). However, the same style that got them back in the game, began to work against them as players began to foul out.

R. W. Combs was ready to take advantage of the situation, and quickly slowed the pace of the game. The Mustangs would stand strong on the free throw line, leading them to the 48-41 win.

Buckhorn (41) Blank 5, Woods 21, Gibson 8, Bowling 4 and Sandlin 3.
