On Saturday, the stands filled at Perry Central as the East Perry Miners and the R. W. Combs Mustangs hit the floor in pursuit of the 6th grade county championship. The two teams suffered through two long weeks of waiting and playing to reach this point.
The game hit a fevered pitch early on, with neither team giving any quarter. Both teams took a turn at controlling the tempo, with East Perry ended the first quarter with the 15-12 lead.
The pace slowed slightly in the second period, and scoring dropped off just a little. The Miners continued to control the tempo, and kept a firm grip on the lead. East Perry went into the intermission with the 26-20 advantage.
R. W. Combs made a strong effort in the third period to erase their deficit, and soon they nearly completed the comeback. However, with time running out in the period, East Perry went on a run that pushed their lead to double-digits (39-29).
The Miners continued to control play in the fourth quarter, and squashed any hoped of a comeback by the Mustangs. East Perry weathered the final R. W. Combs rally, and went on to win the game by the final count of 52-37.
