One of the semifinal games of the 8th grade county tournament put the R. W. Combs Mustangs and the Viper Hornets on the floor. The Mustangs had little trouble advancing in play as they led from the opening tap to the closing horn.

Except for a lone “3” in the opening period by Viper, it was all R. W. Combs (25-3). The Hornets picked up the pace in the second period, and quickly made a game of it. However, at the half, it would be the Mustangs with the 39-14 advantage.

Scoring dropped off after the intermission, with R. W. Combs controlling the contest 53-21 with six minutes to play. The game ended quietly with the Mustangs moving on in tournament play 62-22.

R. W. Combs (62) Sizemore 21, Rice 6, Cornett 14, Holbrook 11, Allen 4 and Beverly 4.

Viper (22) Caldwell 8, Melton 2, Slone 6, Lewis 1 and R. Beverly 5.
