While on spring break, the Hazard Bulldog baseball team traveled to Myrtle Beach to participate in the Cal Riken Experience baseball tournament. In their final game, the Bulldogs took on the Lakers from Russell County.
The game would offer little in the way of offense as both team’s defense stood strong. Hazard, however, would get on the board first, and control the tempo.
The Bulldogs struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning. Cole Ratliff (2b) and Devin Morris (hbp) gave Hazard a pair of base runners, with both finding the plate on RBIs by Ryan Smith and Blake Lockhart (2-0).
Hazard added to their lead in the fourth inning as they scored their third and final run of the game (3-0). Ratliff picked up another double, and came to the plate (courtesy runner Kyle Johnson) on a single by Morris.
Russell County would not go away quietly as they made some noise in the fifth inning. Hazard put out the fire after two runs, and settled in to shut the Lakers out down the stretch.
The 3-2 score would hold as the finals. Ryan Smith got the win on the mound, going seven innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.
Hazard (3) Rudy Akemon 1 hit, Cole Ratliff 1 run and 3 hits, Devin Morris 1 run, 2 hits and 1 RBI, Ryan Smith 2 hits and 1 RBI, Blake Lockhart 1 RBI and Kyle Johnson 1 run.
