On Monday, the Hazard Bulldogs hosted the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets in the sectionals of the All “A” state tournament. The winner of the game would earn a berth to the finals in Lexington next month.
After a fast first inning, the Bulldogs began to make some noise. The Bulldogs were able to break the ice with a run in the second inning. Andy Baker reached base on a fielder’s choice and quickly made his way to third. Baker would then score on a Bailey Blair single (1-0).
Hazard continued to peck away at Middlesboro in the third inning, adding another run to their tally. This time Blake Nidiffer reached the plate after a walk, balk, and single by Griffin Wells (2-0).
The Bulldogs rounded out their offensive performance in the 6th inning as Devin Morris put Hazard up 3-0. Morris opened with a single, and stole his way to third. He then scored when the throw went a rye giving him home.
The three runs would be sufficient as Griffin Wells was stellar on the mound, going the distance with no runs scored, and 1 hit, 6 walks and 14 strikeouts.
Hazard (3) Griffin Wells 1 hit and 1 RBI, Ryan Smith 3 hits, Bailey Blair 1 hit and 1 RBI, Devin Morris 1 run and 1 hit, Andy Baker 1 run and 1 hit and Blake Nidiffer 1 run.
