Bulldogs roll past Engineers to enter finals

The Hazard Bulldogs hooked up with the Estill County Engineers in the semifinals of the 14th region baseball tournament early last week. The Bulldogs defeated the Engineers in both regular season meetings 10-3 and 7-2.

Hazard kicked off the game with a bang, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs garnered the runs with just one hit, a Ryan Smith double that plated one run (4-0).

The Bulldogs continued to keep the pressure on the Engineers in the second inning, posting two more runs to their tally. Griffin Wells scored his second run of the game, while Rudy Akemon’s single plated both runs (6-0).

Hazard continued their offensive barrage in the third inning, this time with a single run (7-0). Ryan Smith scored hist second run after picking up his second hit. Smith scored when the Estill County infield could not handle a ball hit by Devin Morris.

The Bulldogs’ final at bat came in the fourth inning when they crossed the plate four times to bring the count to 11-0. Again, Hazard scored four runs with limited hits (2). Devin Morris had a late hit that gave him 2 RBI, and all but ended the game.

Ryan Smith finished off the Engineers on the mound. Smith threw five innings giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and had 7 strikeouts.
