On Thursday, the Hazard Lady Bulldog soccer team hosted the Perry County Central Lady Commodores in the annual Black Gold Cup. The Lady Commodores had to rely on a late rally to overcome the Lady Dawgs in the season opener, and Hazard was looking to claim this year’s Cup.
The action went back and forth through the first 20 minutes of the game, with Hazard eventually getting the first goal. The Lady Bulldogs’ Kaitlyn Eversole took a free kick after a hand ball, and it was deflected into the net by Emily Smith (1-0).
Just before the half, Perry Central tied the game at one. Kelly Arredondo found an open Whitley Gordon in the box. Gordon was able to beat the goalie with the shot, sending the game to the intermission tied at one.
The Lady Bulldogs would strike first in the second half as well. After the ball bounced around in the box off several players, McCall Davis hit a hard shot off her knee to give Hazard the 2-1 advantage.
With time running out in regulation, the Lady Commodores received a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. Again, it would be Gordon who would face off with the goal. Gordon made good on the shot, tying the game.
Neither team would find the net again in regulation, forcing an overtime period. After the horn ended the overtime, more time was put on the clock. The game finally came to an end as Whitley Gordon completed the hat-trick, scoring on a breakaway goal.
Perry Central claimed the Black Gold Cup with a final score of 3-2.
