On Thursday, the Perry County Central Commodores and the Hazard Bulldogs met in the championship game of the 53rd district boys’ soccer tournament. The Commodores have won the past three titles, and held a 2-0 margin over the Bulldogs in the regular season.

The Commodores quickly went on the attack, but the Bulldogs were ready as they posted nine men in the box to slow them down. The strategy worked well as Perry Central’s shot attempts went uncompleted in the first half. The game went into the break tied at nil.

The Bulldogs continued to crowd the box in the second half in the hopes of forcing a shootout later in the game. However, midway through the period, the Commodores caught a break.

John Watts was able to slice through the Hazard defense for a hard shot on goal. The shot kicked off the goalie where Cameron King picked up the ball and deposited it in the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs pulled out all the stops in the final minutes, getting several good looks at the goal. However, the Commodores’ defense seemed to be in the right spot at the right time on each attempt.

Bulldog goalie Coby Baker was able to withstand a barrage by the Commodore offense as they took 48 shots on goal, with 30 striking between the posts. On the other side, Hazard had six shots on goal with three landing between the posts.

Perry Central went on to claim their fourth consecutive district title with the 1-0 win. Both teams will advance to the region.
