On Thursday, the Perry County Central Commodore soccer team put their region title on the line against the Powell County Pirates. The Commodores won the only regular season match up, and were looking to claim their third consecutive title, and fourth in five years.
Perry Central lit up the scoreboard in the first minute of the game as Cody Gayheart sent a ball past the Powell County defense, and placed in right in front of the goalie. Dagen Combs was able to run onto the ball and beat the goalie one on one (1-0).
Later in the half, the Pirate defense failed to clear a ball, and once again, it was picked up by Combs. He then volleyed the ball into the net for the early 2-0 advantage.
The Commodores would have to wait until the tenth minute of the second half to score again. This time Devin Butler hit a volley into a wide open net after the Perry Central offense pulled the goalie out on a misdirection play (3-0).
The final score of the night also belonged to the Commodores. Cameron King was pulled down in the box, and finished the play by hitting the penalty kick (4-0). On the other side of the field, Perry Central’s defense threw their 10th shutout of the season, giving them their third consecutive region title. All-tournament team: John Watts, Alex Ritchie, Cody Gayheart, Noah Summerset and Dagen Combs (MVP).
