On Thursday, the Perry County Central Lady Commodores took to the pitch against the Estill County Lady Engineers. At stake was the 14th region championship. It would be Perry Central first in school history.
The game proved to be as rugged as any championship game in 14th region history. Defense dominated the night as neither team would be able to find a goal during regulation.
After regulation, the game entered a five minute overtime period. Again neither team was able to score despite several good looks at the goal.
A second overtime was then required to settle the issue. The “Golden Goal” phase (first to score wins) also proved fruitless, sending the game to penalty kicks.
The penalty kick portion of the contest also proved not to settle the outcome. The Commodores took their final kick with a 3-all score, but could not convert.
A “Golden Goal” shootout then ensued. The Lady Commodores connected on their first attempt. The Lady Engineers then stepped to the line with the game in the balance. The Perry Central goalie deflected the ball off the crossbar and back into the field of play, giving the Lady Commodores their first 14th region championship 1-0.
