Last Monday, the R. W. Combs Lady Mustangs and the Viper Lady Hornets hit the hardwood in the title game of the 8th grade county tournament. The game was close for the most part, but a late charge by the Lady Mustangs allowed them to run away from the Lady Hornets and claim the title.
The Lady Mustangs defense forced the momentum to their side of the floor, and garnered them the 11-5 lead with two minutes remaining in the first period. A quick turnaround allowed Viper to draw within a bucket 30 seconds later. The quarter ended with R. W. Combs holding the 14-10 advantage.
By the midway point of the second quarter, R. W. Combs had managed to extend their lead to 20-12, leaving Viper looking for a way to turn things around again. Once again, the Lady Hornets scrapped their way back into contention.
With a minute remaining in the half, the Lady Hornets trailed 21-20. A late basket, however, sent the Lady Mustangs to the locker room leading 23-20.
R. W. Combs came out of the intermission ready to play, and quickly began to tack points onto their tally. On the other side of the floor, Viper struggled to find their offense.
The Lady Hornets did not get their first basket until the 1:32 mark, and by that time the Lady Mustangs had a 13 point lead (35-22). With one frame left to play, R. W. Combs held the 40-25 lead.
Viper put together their best offensive performance in the fourth period, but it would not be enough to stop R. W. Combs from claiming the title. The Lady Mustangs were able to hold on and win the title by the final count of 56-39.
