Over the past year, local powerlifter J.C. Sullivan has been quietly working his way to the top of his sport. The local athlete has entered several state events, and has become a mainstay at the top of the medal podium.
Early in the year, Sullivan competed in the “Beast of the Bluegrass” in Frankfort, and came away with 3rd place. He followed that up with an appearance at the “Barbell Challenge” in Madisonville, and moved up to 2nd place.
A couple of weeks ago, Sullivan pulled out all the stops at the U. S. Strongest Man competition in Louisville. The competition consisted of five events, Max Dead Lift, Viking Press, Farmer’s Walk, Husa-Keg Medley and Atlas Stone. This time, Sullivan topped the competition, and walked away with 1st place.
This weekend, East Kentucky Fitness held their first annual powerlifting meet in Hazard. The winner of the competition would be the athlete with the highest total in the bench press, dead lift and squat.
Again, Sullivan would walk away with 1st place. His total for the day topped out at 1,500 lbs.
