Community comes together to remember and celebrate Joseph Combs

By Tony McGuire -

On Saturday, soccer friends, football friends, and community friends came together to remember and celebrate the life of Joseph Combs. Combs, a former Hazard High School soccer and football player, lost his life in a hiking accident in Colorado.

Hazard High School was the site of the memorial that celebrated Combs’ life, and raised money to start a scholarship in his honor. The memorial started with a motorcycle ride, and ended with a series of soccer games.

Hundreds of people showed up to participate in the event. So many, that the games had to be broken into several events. The games went on well after dark, with everyone enjoying the friendly competition and sharing their memories of Combs.

The first two scholarships were awarded at the event with Brandon Wooton of Perry Central and Justin Combs (Joesph’s brother) of Hazard receiving the other. The school plans to make the event and scholarships and annual event.
